Aplix vs Snaps

Aplix

Aplix  (also known as–hook and loop or Velcro) is  similar to your regular disposable diaper.   This allows you to get the diaper on quickly and with ease.  This also enables you to create a perfect fit.  You can pull the side tabs of the diaper as tightly as needed to get the perfect size for your baby all with very little effort.  This is great for grandparents, babysitters and even a reluctant husband :)

The down side to aplix is that it can wear out easily.  The Velcro starts to curl  and lose its stickiness after use. Also, when using aplix you have to remember to use the laundry tabs.  Laundry tabs are  just a spot on the diaper that you can fold and stick the Velcro sides down during washing.  This makes an extra step from taking the diaper off the baby to the wet bag–doesn’t sound like a big deal, except when you forget to do it all the time!   If you forget to stick your Velcro tabs to the laundry tab, you can wind up with a long diaper chain when you go to take out the wash.  This is not only annoying but can start pulling on the other diapers.  Also, because aplix is easy to put on, it is also easy to remove.  Older babies can easily figure out how to take the diaper off!

Snaps

Cloth diapers with snap closures  will have several rows of plastic or metal snaps that you can button shut.  The snaps typically last longer, many times out lasting the diaper itself.  Occasionally, a snap can break or pop off, but most cloth diaper companies have great replacement/warranty policies.

The downside to the snap closure is that is does take some effort to but on. Diaper changes will take a little extra time to button all the snaps, especially with a baby who likes to squirm during diaper changes!  This could be intimidating for those who are not used to cloth diapers.  The fit also won’t be  as precise as what you get using aplix.  This is  especially so for when your little one is in-between snaps.

Honestly, what it truly comes down to personal preference. Both have positives and negatives.  Although my husband would prefer a stash full of aplix, I am happy having a mixture of both.  Each serves its own purpose and is useful at different times and situations.

When Using Cloth Diapers Which Closure Do You Prefer??

  1. They didn’t have that many cool options when I had babies! So I used whatever was on sale lol. These are cute, but if the velcro ones get beat up too quickly, it’s not really worth it. Unless you can fix the velcro yourself…..

  2. I think a mixture of both would be a good idea too. After your paragraph about velcro I was thinking snaps but if I have a wiggly baby I think I would lose my mind! hahaha. have both on hand is best for sure!

  3. This is our first child and therefore first time cloth diapering. Aplix is my friend. Snaps scare me. lol I’ve heard a lot of people say they like snaps because they are harder for babies to undo themselves when they get older, but I already get frustrated enough with the snaps on her jammies and certain other outfits that I just don’t want to mess with them!

  4. I sure wish this was available when my youngins were even smaller youngins, it would have really come in handy. I think these are super unique (and EASY). We’re trying for more, so this is definitely going on the list of “to gets”.

  5. Thank you for sharing such a great review! When my kids were little we had 1 choice safety pins-LOL! The disposable diaper was just becoming popular but I just couldn’t bring myself to spend that much money just so I would have to clean poopy diapers!! Then when we learned what it did to our landfills was just outrageous! I think it is great that so many people are going back to the cloth diapers. And these ones both look like great options.

  6. My siblings and I grew up with cloth diapers and pins with the rubber pants…and when I first started babysitting, figuring out Pampers, Huggies, and the like was a nightmare…lol…I’m a huge proponent of cloth…and am totally curious about Aplix! Thanks for sharing!
